A social media expert has brought a new way of networking from Gloucestershire to Wales. Jonathan Pollinger has launched Laptop Friday as an informal and friendly meeting place for start-ups, freelances and entrepreneurs to share a workspace, expertise and, importantly, great coffee!
Jonathan started Laptop Friday in Cardiff’s Little Man Coffee shop after recently moving to the capital from Cheltenham. Having already co-founded successful groups in Cheltenham, Stroud and Malvern, it was time to bring the ethos of collaboration, support and creativity over the bridge.
Jonathan, who runs social media consultancy Intranet Future, said: “If there’s one word which sums up Laptop Fridays, it’s ‘share’. People come along to share a workspace and their knowledge without the hard sell of some networking groups. Laptop Friday is aimed at people who work from home and are self-employed but anyone can drop in on their way to work or if they simply fancy a change from the office. Everyone is welcome.”
Laptop Friday events attract around 100 people each week, from businesses in the creative and technology industries as well as students and those looking for business ideas. The aim is to now expand to more locations across south Wales, in addition to continuing to grow the Cardiff meet-up.
Social media training
Jonathan founded Intranet Future in 2009 having introduced a social intranet to multi-national outsourcing company Vertex. He works with SMEs, charities including the National Trust and Well Child, and local government, enabling them to understand social media trends and features and to better engage with clients. Intranet Future also runs workshops for training organisations and provides one-to-one consultancy.
Whether helping employees work together, connecting businesses with customers or encouraging freelancers to share ideas, Jonathan sees social media as a vital and powerful tool. He regularly shares his insights on on BBC radio and has even helped an MP retain his seat against the odds!
Laptop Friday is held in Little Man Coffee, Bridge St, Cardiff, every Friday between 7.30am and 12.30pm. There’s no need to book and the event is free, with just the coffee to pay for. You can also watch Jonathan present THE #SocialToday SHOW on Facebook Live every Monday at 8.45am.
