Design for a busy life suits business mum Jess!

Newborn Maximus snuggles up to mum Jess

Talented illustrator Jessica Morgan has designs on one of the UK’s most prestigious business awards after being shortlisted from more than 1,000 applications – a month after having her second baby in just over a year.

Jess, Creative Director at Jessica Draws Media, has been named as a finalist in the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards just weeks after giving birth to son Maximus, who followed 15 months after big sister Murphy. By her own admission, Jess “runs head first into things and asks questions later” – and it’s an attitude that’s seen her build a successful business from scratch in five years and now count Arriva Trains Wales,, Cardiff University and Cardiff Council among her clients.

Jess, 31, beat off tough competition to be nominated in the Creative Industries category after impressing judges with her go-get approach. In addition to creating eye-catching designs in her distinct style, Jess also manages Jessica Draws’ sales, marketing, business development and finance – although, thankfully, growth has recently enabled Jess’ husband and right-hand man Dave to join the team full time as an animator and resident tech expert.

Jess – Creative Industries winner at the Cardiff Life Awards 2017 and Freelancer of the Year at the Regional Awards Cardiff in 2016 – says: “I say yes to everything and then learn how to do it if I don’t already know. I do like a challenge! Building a business, getting married and raising children in the last five years has certainly kept me busy and on my toes, and that’s the way I like it!

Top team Jess and Dave celebrate success at the Regional Awards Cardiff

“With more than 1,000 businesses entering the awards nationally across all categories, I’m beyond amazed and super excited to make the regional shortlist. With such truly inspiring entrepreneurs also nominated, I’m genuinely honoured to be named among them and wish all the finalists luck for November 1. Of course I’ll be taking Dave along with me to the gala evening – he’s the one who encouraged me to go freelance in the first place and I definitely wouldn’t have been nominated without his amazing support.”

Awards creator Francesca James said: “We have been inundated with some incredible entries this year, and all shortlisted applicants should be extremely proud of themselves! This year has seen a record number of entrants and we’ve been absolutely blown away by the strength and diversity of applications.

“Jessica has built a successful, thriving design business from nothing while harnessing the innate entrepreneurial ability to be the owner, salesperson, marketer, accountant and everything else in between.”

Now in its fifth year, the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards celebrates the hard work and inspiring stories of British entrepreneurs and businesses in Great Britain. With previous winners such as David Buttress of Just Eat and James Watt of BrewDog going on to become household names, and with increased support from NatWest, the organisers have been able to extend the coverage of the awards across the UK in 2017 programme, with ceremonies now being held in five cities – Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and London.
